Many beach holidays begin with stressful flights, buses, and ferries, but there’s an easier way. Traveling by train has so many benefits, leaving you feeling relaxed before you’ve even started your vacation. Whether you’re looking for a delicious meal with a view of the sea or a chill family holiday, there are plenty of beautiful European beaches accessible by trains.

ITALY:  Baia del Silenzio, Sestri Levante
Closest train station: Sestri Levante Stazione, 1.1km, a 14 min walk away.

The charming Italian coastal town of Sestri Levante is one of the beaches accessible by trains and has long been celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes and colorful seaside houses and resorts, all rich in history and culture. And beachgoers – you’re in luck. The small beach named Baia del Silenzio, or ‘Bay of Silence’ gets its moniker from the calm, crystal blue waters of the bay, as well as the natural rock formations that protect the beach from the wind.

To avoid the crowds, we’d suggest visiting this corner of paradise during September or October. This is after the July and August holiday-makers have made their way home.

Unlike the more famous Spanish beaches of Ibiza and Majorca, Platja de la Llosa is a quiet beach on the coast of the small beach town of Cambrils. Perfect for families or couples looking for a relaxing vacation. Platja de la Llosa has plenty of restaurants and cafes nearby, as well as umbrellas and loungers for hire, public bathrooms, and wheelchair access.

The beach itself has small man-made coves that limit waves and tides. Combined with the clear blue warm water, this makes swimming and snorkeling very relaxing.

PORTUGAL: Meia Praia, Algarve
Closest train station: Meia Praia train station, a 6 minute, 500m walk.

Located on the famous Algarve coast, the Meia Praia is the largest in the Lagos region and also our largest beaches accessible by trains. Compared to other, more tourist-filled parts of the Algarve, Meia Praia is a four-kilometer-long oasis of gorgeous golden sand and calm. There are also cafes and bars dotted along the coastline. The Western edge of the beach is slightly busier due to its proximity to Lagos.

Meia Praia is also a popular center for water sports including windsurfing, kite surfing, and jet skiing. Visitors can pay for lessons and hire equipment. For the less adventurous, a dip in the refreshingly cold water and a lie-down on a lounger under an umbrella, also available for rent.

Our last pick for beaches accessible by trains, FRANCE: Plage de Senix, Guethary
Closest train station: Gare de Guethary just 2.1km away, easily walkable but you could take a quick taxi ride to the sea.

A tiny, secluded beach on the wild, unspoiled South-Western coastline of France, Plage de Senix (also sometimes called Cenitz) is the perfect destination for beginner surfers, families, or solo travelers. In the heart of the French Basque Country, between Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Guethary is a charming old fishing town.

Located at the southernmost end of Guethary and that’s why it is part of our beaches accessible by trains, the waves at Plage de Senix are a little smaller than you’d find up along the coast in Biarritz, which is known as Europe’s surfing capital. The natural beauty and relaxed vibe make it the perfect place to visit.
