Historisch gesehen hat die Stadt aufgrund ihrer strategischen Lage auf der italienischen Halbinsel und ihres natürlichen Hafens an der Adria eine wichtige Rolle in Handel und Kultur gespielt. Die Stadt bleibt ein wichtiger Handelshafen mit Griechenland und dem Nahen Osten. Zu seinen Industrien gehören Landwirtschaft, Chemie und Stromerzeugung.
