Am Zusammenfluss des Rheins und seines Nebenflusses Düssel liegt die Stadt im Zentrum der Metropolregion Rhein-Ruhr und Rheinland mit der Region Köln Bonn im Süden und der Ruhr im Norden. Der größte Teil der Stadt liegt am rechten Rheinufer (im Gegensatz zu Köln, dessen Stadtzentrum am linken Flussufer liegt).
