Bottrop ist eine Stadt in Westmitteldeutschland am Rhein-Herne-Kanal in Nordrhein-Westfalen. Bottrop liegt im Ruhrgebiet neben Essen, Oberhausen, Gladbeck und Dorsten. Die Stadt war ein Kohlebergbau- und Eisenbahnzentrum und beherbergt Fabriken, die Kohlenteer-Derivate, Chemikalien, Textilien und Maschinen herstellen. Bottrop wuchs ab den 1860er Jahren als Bergbauzentrum, wurde 1921 als Stadt gechartert und während der Ölkampagne des Zweiten Weltkriegs bombardiert. 1975 vereinigte es sich mit den Nachbargemeinden Gladbeck und Kirchhellen, aber Gladbeck verließ es 1976, was dazu führte, dass Kirchhellen als Bottrop-Kirchhellen ein Bezirk von Bottrop wurde.
