Gotha ist die fünftgrößte Stadt in Thüringen und liegt 20 Kilometer westlich von Erfurt und 25 Kilometer östlich von Eisenach mit 44.000 Einwohnern. Zwischen 1650 und 1850 erlebte Gotha eine kulturelle Blütezeit als Zentrum der Wissenschaften und Künste, das von den Herzögen von Sachsen-Gotha gefördert wurde.
