Hasselt ist eine flämische Stadt und Gemeinde sowie Hauptstadt und größte Stadt der Provinz Limburg in der flämischen Region Belgiens. Zur Gemeinde Hasselt gehören die ursprüngliche Stadt Hasselt sowie die alten Gemeinden Sint-Lambrechts-Herk, Wimmertingen, Kermt, Spalbeek, Kuringen, Stokrooie, Stevoort und Runkst sowie die Weiler und Pfarreien Kiewit, Godsheide und Rapertingen. Am 31. Dezember 2007 hatte Hasselt eine Gesamtbevölkerung von 71.520 (34.951 Männer und 36.569 Frauen). Sowohl der Demer als auch der Albertkanal verlaufen durch die Gemeinde.
