Hildesheim [Lowerhɪldəsˌhaɪ̯m] ist eine niedersächsische Stadt mit 104.230 Einwohnern. Es liegt im Stadtteil Hildesheim, etwa 30 km südöstlich von Hannover am Ufer des Flusses Innerste, einem kleinen Nebenfluss der Leine. Der Heilige Römische Kaiser Ludwig der Fromme gründete 815 das Bistum Hildesheim und schuf die erste Siedlung mit einer Kapelle am sogenannten Domhügel. Hildesheim liegt an der Autobahn 7 und damit am Verbindungspunkt des Nordens (Hamburg und darüber hinaus) mit Südeuropa. Mit dem Hildesheimer Dom und der St.-Michael-Kirche wurde Hildesheim 1985 zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe erklärt.
