Gotha ist die fünftgrößte Stadt in Thüringen und liegt 20 Kilometer westlich von Erfurt und 25 Kilometer östlich von Eisenach mit 44.000 Einwohnern. Die Stadt ist die Hauptstadt des Bezirks Gotha und war von 1640 bis zum Ende der Monarchie in Deutschland 1918 auch eine Residenz der Ernestin Wettins. Das hier entstandene Haus Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha brachte viele europäische Herrscher hervor, darunter auch die königlichen Häuser des Vereinigten Königreichs, Belgiens, Portugals (bis 1910) und Bulgariens (bis 1946). Im Mittelalter war Gotha eine reiche Handelsstadt an der Handelsstraße Via Regia. Zwischen 1650 und 1850 erlebte Gotha eine kulturelle Blütezeit als Zentrum der Wissenschaften und Künste, das von den Herzögen von Sachsen-Gotha gefördert wurde.
