Aufgrund der reichen barocken Baudenkmäler in der Stadt wird Lecce allgemein als "Florenz des Südens" bezeichnet. Die Stadt hat auch eine lange traditionelle Affinität zur griechischen Kultur, die bis zu ihrer Gründung zurückreicht.
