Es ist die Hauptstadt der Salentine Peninsula, einer Sub-Halbinsel an der Ferse der italienischen Halbinsel und über 2.000 Jahre alt. Aufgrund der reichen barocken Baudenkmäler in der Stadt wird Lecce allgemein als "Florenz des Südens" bezeichnet. Die Stadt hat auch eine lange traditionelle Affinität zur griechischen Kultur, die bis zu ihrer Gründung zurückreicht.
