Es ist die Hauptstadt der Salentine Peninsula, einer Sub-Halbinsel an der Ferse der italienischen Halbinsel und über 2.000 Jahre alt. Aufgrund der reichen barocken Baudenkmäler in der Stadt wird Lecce allgemein als "Florenz des Südens" bezeichnet.
