Die Gemeinde Leiden hatte im August 2017 123.856 Einwohner, aber die Stadt bildet mit ihren Vororten Oegstgeest, Leiderdorp, Voorschoten und Zoeterwoude mit 206.647 Einwohnern eine dicht verbundene Agglomeration. Das niederländische Zentralamt für Statistik (CBS) bezieht Katwijk ferner in die Agglomeration ein, wodurch die Gesamtbevölkerung des städtischen Ballungsraums Leiden 270.879 beträgt, und im größeren Stadtgebiet Leiden sind auch Teylingen, Noordwijk und Noordwijkerhout mit insgesamt 348.868 Einwohnern vertreten. Leiden liegt an der Oude Rijn, etwa 20 Kilometer von Den Haag im Süden und etwa 40 Kilometer von Amsterdam im Norden entfernt. Das Erholungsgebiet der Kaag-Seen (Kagerplassen) liegt nordöstlich von Leiden.
