Lourdes ist eine kleine Marktstadt am Fuße der Pyrenäen. Es ist Teil des Departements Hautes-Pyrénées in der Region Occitanie im Südwesten Frankreichs. Vor der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts war die Stadt am bekanntesten für das Château fort de Lourdes, eine befestigte Burg, die sich aus einem Felsvorsprung in ihrer Mitte erhebt. 1858 erlangte Lourdes in Frankreich und im Ausland aufgrund der marianischen Erscheinungen, die angeblich von dem später heiliggesprochenen Bauernmädchen Bernadette Soubirous gesehen wurden, eine herausragende Stellung.
