Es liegt am Fuße der Julischen Alpen und grenzt an Slowenien. Es ist die Hauptstadt der Provinz Görz und ein lokales Zentrum für Tourismus, Industrie und Handel. Seit 1947 hat sich auf der anderen Seite der heutigen italienisch-slowenischen Grenze eine Partnerstadt namens Nova Gorica entwickelt. Die gesamte Region war nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg Gegenstand eines Territorialstreits zwischen Italien und Jugoslawien: Nachdem die neuen Grenzen 1947 festgelegt und die Altstadt Italien überlassen worden waren, wurde Nova Gorica auf jugoslawischer Seite errichtet.
