Lama (tibetisch: བླ་ མ་, Wylie: bla-ma; "Häuptling" oder "Hohepriester") ist ein Titel für einen Lehrer des Dharma im tibetischen Buddhismus. Der Name ähnelt dem Sanskrit-Begriff Guru und ist im Gebrauch ähnlich, aber nicht identisch mit dem westlichen Mönchsrang des Abtes. Historisch gesehen wurde der Begriff für verehrte spirituelle Meister oder Klosterköpfe verwendet. Heute kann der Titel als Ehrentitel verwendet werden, der einem Mönch, einer Nonne oder (in den Schulen von Nyingma, Kagyu und Sakya) einem fortgeschrittenen tantrischen Praktiker verliehen wird, um ein Maß an spiritueller Erlangung und Autorität zum Unterrichten zu bestimmen, oder er kann Teil eines solchen Titels sein als Dalai Lama oder Panchen Lama auf eine Linie von wiedergeborenen Lamas (Tulkus) angewendet. Vielleicht aufgrund von Missverständnissen früher westlicher Gelehrter, die versuchen, den tibetischen Buddhismus zu verstehen, wurde der Begriff Lama historisch fälschlicherweise allgemein auf tibetische Mönche angewendet.
