Es hat einen Bahnhof an der Bahnstrecke Sangerhausen - Erfurt, an dem einst eine stillgelegte Strecke nach Bad Frankenhausen und Sondershausen abzweigte.

Oldenburg ist eine unabhängige Stadt im Landkreis Oldenburg im Bundesland Niedersachsen. Die Stadt heißt offiziell Oldenburg (Oldb) (Oldenburg in Oldenburg), um sich von Oldenburg in Holstein zu unterscheiden. Während der französischen Annexion (1811–1813) nach dem Napoleonischen Krieg gegen Großbritannien wurde es auf Französisch auch als Le Vieux-Bourg bezeichnet. Die Stadt liegt an den Flüssen Hunte und Haaren im Nordwesten zwischen den Städten Bremen im Osten und Groningen (Niederlande) im Westen. Es hat eine Bevölkerung von 170.000 (November 2019).
