Ravenna (rə-VEN-ə, italienisch: [raˈvenna], auch lokal [raˈvɛnna]; Romagnol: Ravèna) ist die Hauptstadt der Provinz Ravenna in der Region Emilia-Romagna in Norditalien. Es war die Hauptstadt des Weströmischen Reiches von 402 bis zum Zusammenbruch dieses Reiches im Jahr 476. Es diente dann als Hauptstadt des ostgotischen Königreichs, bis es 540 vom Byzantinischen Reich zurückerobert wurde. Danach bildete die Stadt bis zum Einmarsch der Langobarden im Jahr 751 das Zentrum des byzantinischen Exarchats von Ravenna. Danach wurde sie Sitz des Königreichs der Langobarden.
