Bistagno ist eine Gemeinde in der Provinz Alessandria in der italienischen Region Piemont, etwa 70 Kilometer südöstlich von Turin und etwa 35 Kilometer südwestlich von Alessandria. Obwohl die häufigste und am weitesten verbreitete Etymologie für das Toponym mit dem Zusammenfluss von zwei "Zweigen" des Flusses Bormida (Spigno Bormida und Millesimo Bormida) auf dem Gebiet von Bistagno (Bistagno <bi + stagno, bi (s) - verbunden ist - + Teich, wobei "Teich" nicht nur auf ein stehendes Gewässer hinweist, sondern auch mit der Wurzel * agn-> Latin amnis im Sinne von "Fluss", "Wasserlauf", "Strom", " torrent '), eine neue Etymologie, die auf sprachlichen Beweisen basiert, verbindet Bistagno mit * bĭst-ăgnŏ-s (proto-indo-europäisch ~ keltisch), was "kleiner Fasan" bedeuten und auf die Anwesenheit dieses spezifischen Vogels hinweisen würde auf dem Gebiet des Dorfes in der Jungsteinzeit oder auf jeden Fall in prähistorischen Zeiten.
