Venedig (VEN-iss; Italienisch: Venezia [veˈnɛttsja]; Venezianisch: Venesia oder Venexia, ausgesprochen [veˈnɛsja]) ist eine Stadt im Nordosten Italiens und die Hauptstadt der Region Venetien. Es liegt auf einer Gruppe von 118 kleinen Inseln, die durch Kanäle getrennt und durch über 400 Brücken verbunden sind. Die Inseln befinden sich in der flachen Lagune von Venedig, einer geschlossenen Bucht, die zwischen den Mündungen des Po und des Piave liegt (genauer gesagt zwischen Brenta und Sile). Im Jahr 2018 lebten 260.897 Menschen in der Comune di Venezia, von denen rund 55.000 in der historischen Stadt Venedig (centro storico) leben. Zusammen mit Padua und Treviso gehört die Stadt zur Metropolregion Padua-Treviso-Venedig (PATREVE), die als statistische Metropolregion mit einer Gesamtbevölkerung von 2,6 Millionen gilt.
