Bottrop es una ciudad en el centro oeste de Alemania, en el canal Rin-Herne, en Renania del Norte-Westfalia. Ubicado en la zona industrial del Ruhr, Bottrop linda con Essen, Oberhausen, Gladbeck y Dorsten. La ciudad había sido un centro ferroviario y minero de carbón y contiene fábricas que producen derivados de alquitrán de hulla, productos químicos, textiles y maquinaria. Bottrop creció como un centro minero a partir de la década de 1860, fue fundado como ciudad en 1921 y bombardeado durante la Campaña Petrolera de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. En 1975 se unificó con las comunidades vecinas de Gladbeck y Kirchhellen, pero Gladbeck lo dejó en 1976, lo que llevó a Kirchhellen a convertirse en un distrito de Bottrop como Bottrop-Kirchhellen.
