Marano como apellido tiene origen italiano noble, deriva del apellido Marani de Vicenza que llegó a Nápoles en el siglo XVI con Francesco Antonio enterrado en la iglesia de Sant'Antonelli a Caponapoli en el antiguo centro de la ciudad de Nápoles. Posteriormente sucedió a Francesco Antonio, Domenico, barón del Preturo en 1591; Nicola con decreto de la Gran Corte el 11 de diciembre de 1691 heredó todas las propiedades de la familia y obtuvo el título de marqués de Petruro el 28 de mayo de 1695 en Madrid; Alexander Marano fue el último marqués del Petruro en el siglo XIX.
