Varenna es una comuna en el lago de Como en la provincia de Lecco en la región italiana de Lombardía, ubicada a unos 60 kilómetros (37 millas) al norte de Milán y a unos 20 kilómetros (12 millas) al noroeste de Lecco . Varenna fue fundada por pescadores locales en 769, y más tarde se alió con la comuna de Milán. En 1126 fue destruido por la comuna rival de Como, y luego recibió a los refugiados de la Isola Comacina, que había encontrado el mismo destino (1169). Varenna limita con los siguientes municipios: Esino Lario, Lierna, Oliveto Lario, Perledo.
