Avignon (UK:, US:, français: [aviɲɔ̃]; provençal: Avinhon (norme classique) ou Avignoun (norme mistralienne) [aviˈɲun]; latin: Avenio) est une commune du sud-est de la France dans le département du Vaucluse sur la rive gauche du Rhône. Sur les 90 194 habitants de la ville (en 2011), environ 12 000 vivent dans l'ancien centre-ville entouré de ses remparts médiévaux. Entre 1309 et 1377, pendant la papauté d'Avignon, sept papes successifs résidèrent à Avignon et en 1348, le pape Clément VI acheta la ville à Joanna I de Naples. Le contrôle papal a persisté jusqu'en 1791 lorsque, pendant la Révolution française, il est devenu une partie de la France. La ville est aujourd'hui la capitale du département du Vaucluse et l'une des rares villes françaises à avoir conservé ses remparts.
