Marano comme nom de famille a une origine italienne noble, dérive du nom de famille Marani de Vicence qui est venu à Naples au 16ème siècle avec Francesco Antonio enterré dans l'église de Sant'Antonelli à Caponapoli dans l'ancien centre de la ville de Naples. Succèdent ensuite à Francesco Antonio, Domenico, baron du Preturo en 1591; Nicola avec arrêté de la Grande Cour du 11 décembre 1691 a hérité de toutes les propriétés de famille et a obtenu le titre de marquis de Petruro le 28 mai 1695 à Madrid; Alexander Marano était le dernier marquis de Petruro au XIXe siècle.
