Avec une population de 107 436 habitants, Bolzano est également de loin la plus grande ville du Tyrol du Sud et la troisième du Tyrol. La grande région métropolitaine compte environ 250000 habitants et est l'un des centres urbains des Alpes.Bolzano est le siège de l'Université libre de Bozen-Bolzano, où des conférences et des séminaires sont organisés en anglais, allemand et italien. La ville abrite également le Haut Commandement Alpini de l'armée italienne (COMALP) et certaines de ses unités de combat et de soutien.Dans la version 2014 du classement annuel de la qualité de vie dans les villes italiennes, Bolzano a été classé comme le meilleur.
