En 2016, elle comptait 250 704 habitants. Centre de commerce puissant et influent dans l'Allemagne médiévale, Braunschweig a été membre de la Ligue hanséatique du 13e au 17e siècle. C'était la capitale de trois États successifs: la Principauté de Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (1269–1432, 1754–1807 et 1813–1814), le duché de Brunswick (1814–1918) et l'État libre du Brunswick (1918– 1946).
