Gela est une ville et une commune de la région autonome de Sicile, la plus grande région et population de la côte sud de la Sicile. La Catane a été détruite par des tremblements de terre catastrophiques en 1169 et 1693, et par plusieurs éruptions volcaniques du Mont Etna voisin, dont la plus violente a eu lieu en 1669. La Catane a été fondée au 8ème siècle avant JC par les Chalcidiens.
