C'est la 12ème ville la plus peuplée d'Allemagne, la quatrième plus grande par zone (après seulement Berlin, Hambourg et Cologne), et la troisième ville la plus peuplée de l'ancienne Allemagne de l'Est, après seulement (Est) Berlin et Leipzig.
