Harlesiel est une station balnéaire sur la côte frisonne orientale de l'Allemagne, à l'embouchure de la rivière Harle. Il se trouve dans le district de Wittmund, à environ 1 kilomètre (0,62 mi) au nord de Carolinensiel. C'est une petite ville, avec une population de 809 habitants en 2009, gonflée par quelque 4800 touristes en saison.Harlesiel a été fondée en 1956, dans le cadre des dernières étapes de l'assèchement du Harlebucht. Les ports intérieurs et extérieurs de la ville sont divisés par la station de pompage qui maintient la terre au sec; ce bâtiment intègre une serrure pour permettre le passage à la mer. De nombreuses attractions et installations touristiques ont été ajoutées au fil des ans, notamment des terrains de camping, une plage, une piscine d'eau salée et un terrain de golf miniature.

Au confluent du Rhin et de son affluent Düsseldorf, la ville se situe au centre des régions métropolitaines Rhin-Ruhr et Rhénanie avec la région de Cologne Bonn au sud et la Ruhr au nord. La majeure partie de la ville se trouve sur la rive droite du Rhin (contrairement à Cologne, dont le centre-ville se trouve sur la rive gauche du fleuve). La ville est la plus grande de la zone de dialecte allemand bas franconien (étroitement liée au néerlandais). "Dorf" signifiant "village" en allemand, le suffixe "-dorf" (apparenté anglais: thorp) est inhabituel dans la région germanophone pour un règlement de la taille de Düsseldorf.
