Hove est une station balnéaire du comté d'East Sussex et une partie constitutive de la ville de Brighton et Hove. A l'origine "petit mais ancien village de pêcheurs" entouré de terres agricoles ouvertes, il s'est développé rapidement au 19ème siècle en réponse au développement de son voisin oriental Brighton, et à l'époque victorienne, c'était une ville pleinement développée avec le statut d'arrondissement. Des paroisses voisines comme Aldrington et Hangleton ont été annexées à la fin du XIXe siècle et au début du XXe siècle. En 1997, dans le cadre de la réforme du gouvernement local, l'arrondissement a fusionné avec Brighton pour former l'arrondissement de Brighton et Hove, et cette autorité unitaire a obtenu le statut de ville en 2000.

Etterbeek est l'une des 19 communes de la Région de Bruxelles-Capitale (Belgique). Elle voisine les communes d'Auderghem, la Ville de Bruxelles, Ixelles, Schaerbeek, Woluwe-Saint-Lambert et Woluwe-Saint-Pierre. Comme toutes les communes bruxelloises, il est légalement bilingue (français-néerlandais). Le campus universitaire principal de Vrije Universiteit Brussel s'appelle Campus Etterbeek, bien qu'il ne soit pas géographiquement situé à Etterbeek mais dans la municipalité adjacente d'Ixelles.
