Grou est une ville de la province de la Frise des Pays-Bas et comptait environ 5655 habitants en janvier 2017. Depuis 2014, Grou fait partie de la commune de Leeuwarden. La ville est située sur le lac Pikmeer et les Prinses Margrietkanaal. Heineken a exploité un centre de distribution de Frise à Grou pendant 25 ans jusqu'en 2004. Il était la capitale de la municipalité d'Idaarderadeel avant la réorganisation des municipalités en 1984, et la capitale de la municipalité de Boarnsterhim jusqu'en 2014.
