Hanovre ou Hanovre (; allemand: Hanovre [haˈnoːfɐ]; bas allemand: Hannober) est la capitale et la plus grande ville de l'État allemand de Basse-Saxe. Ses 535061 habitants (2017) en font la treizième plus grande ville d'Allemagne ainsi que la troisième plus grande ville du nord de l'Allemagne après Hambourg et Brême. La ville se situe au confluent de la rivière Leine (progression: Aller → Weser → Mer du Nord) et de son affluent Ihme, au sud de la plaine d'Allemagne du Nord, et est la plus grande ville de la région métropolitaine de Hanovre – Braunschweig – Göttingen – Wolfsburg . C'est la cinquième plus grande ville du dialecte bas-allemand après Hambourg, Dortmund, Essen et Brême. Avant de devenir la capitale de la Basse-Saxe en 1946, Hanovre était la capitale de la Principauté de Calenberg (1636-1692), l'électorat de Hanovre (1692-1814), le Royaume de Hanovre (1814-1866), la province de Hanovre de le Royaume de Prusse (1868-1918), la province de Hanovre de l'État libre de Prusse (1918-1946) et de l'État de Hanovre (1946).
