La majeure partie de la ville se trouve sur la rive droite du Rhin (contrairement à Cologne, dont le centre-ville se trouve sur la rive gauche du fleuve). La ville est la plus grande de la zone de dialecte allemand bas franconien (étroitement liée au néerlandais). "Dorf" signifiant "village" en allemand, le suffixe "-dorf" (apparenté anglais: thorp) est inhabituel dans la région germanophone pour un règlement de la taille de Düsseldorf.
