La majeure partie de la ville se trouve sur la rive droite du Rhin (contrairement à Cologne, dont le centre-ville se trouve sur la rive gauche du fleuve). La ville est la plus grande de la zone de dialecte allemand de basse franconie (étroitement liée au néerlandais). «Dorf» signifiant «village» en allemand, le suffixe «-dorf» (en anglais: thorp) est inhabituel dans la région germanophone pour une colonie de la taille de Düsseldorf.
