Orio avait une population de 5 901 habitants en 2016. L'activité sportive la plus connue et la plus visible à Orio est la régate d'aviron typique de la zone côtière basque et cantabrique, avec une équipe représentée par la couleur jaune. La ville est desservie par la ligne côtière d'Euskotren, la route N-634 et l'autoroute A-8 (depuis 2010).
