Au Moyen Âge, une pieve était une église rurale avec un baptistère, dont dépendaient d'autres églises sans baptistères. Le mot italien pieve est issu de la plèbe latine qui, après l'expansion du christianisme en Italie, a été appliquée à la communauté des baptisés.
