Quarto est un livre ou une brochure produite à partir de "feuilles blanches" complètes, chacune étant imprimée avec huit pages de texte, quatre sur un côté, puis pliée deux fois pour produire quatre feuilles. Les feuilles sont ensuite découpées le long des plis pour produire huit pages de livre. Chaque page imprimée présente une taille d'un quart de la feuille vierge complète. Le premier livre imprimé européen connu est un quatuor, le Sibyllenbuch, qui aurait été imprimé par Gutenberg en 1452–53, avant la Bible de Gutenberg, ne survivant que comme un fragment. Quarto est également utilisé comme description générale de la taille des livres qui mesurent environ 12 pouces (30 cm) de hauteur, et en tant que tel n'indique pas nécessairement le format d'impression réel des livres, qui peut même être inconnu comme c'est le cas pour de nombreux modernes livres.
