La ville a également une longue affinité traditionnelle avec la culture grecque depuis sa fondation; on dit que les Messapiens qui fondèrent la ville étaient des Crétois dans les archives grecques. À ce jour, dans la Grecìa Salentina, un groupe de villes non loin de Lecce, la langue griko est toujours parlée.
