Le Père Noël moderne est né des traditions entourant l'historique Saint-Nicolas (un évêque grec du IVe siècle et un donateur de Myra), la figure britannique du Père Noël et la figure néerlandaise de Sinterklaas (lui-même également basé sur Saint-Nicolas). Certains soutiennent que le Père Noël a également absorbé des éléments du dieu germanique Wodan, qui a été associé à l'événement païen de l'hiver de Yule et a mené la Wild Hunt, une procession fantomatique dans le ciel. Le Père Noël est généralement décrit comme un homme corpulent, gai, à barbe blanche - parfois avec des lunettes - portant un manteau rouge avec un col et des poignets en fourrure blanche, un pantalon rouge à revers en fourrure blanche, un chapeau rouge avec de la fourrure blanche et une ceinture en cuir noire et bottes et portant un sac plein de cadeaux pour les enfants.
