Gavorrano est une commune de la montagne située dans la province de Grosseto, dans la région italienne de la Toscane, située à environ 100 km au sud-ouest de Florence et à environ 25 km au nord-ouest de Grosseto. Gavorrano borde les municipalités de Castiglione della Pescaia, Grosseto, Massa Marittima, Roccastrada et Scarlino. Le village est situé sur le versant nord de Poggio Ballone, à l'est de Scarlino, dans une zone extrêmement riche en termes d'exploitation minière, notamment pour les grands gisements de minerai de fer pyrite qui ont été intensivement exploités jusqu'au début des années 1980. La ville est connue en raison de Pia de 'Tolomei (dont le destin est lié dans les cantoes "Purgatoire" de la Divine Comédie de Dante Alighieri), et pour être le lieu de naissance de l'écrivain Giuseppe Bandi, patriote et journaliste italien.
