Varenna est une commune sur le lac de Côme dans la province de Lecco dans la région italienne de Lombardie, située à environ 60 kilomètres (37 mi) au nord de Milan et à environ 20 kilomètres (12 mi) au nord-ouest de Lecco . Varenna a été fondée par des pêcheurs locaux en 769, et a ensuite été alliée à la commune de Milan. En 1126, il fut détruit par la commune rivale de Côme, et reçut plus tard les réfugiés de l'Isola Comacina, qui avaient connu le même sort (1169). Varenna est limitrophe des municipalités suivantes: Esino Lario, Lierna, Oliveto Lario, Perledo. Les principaux sites touristiques sont le Castello di Vezio, un petit musée dédié au Lariosaurus (un reptile marin du Trias moyen lié aux tortues), ainsi que les beaux jardins de la Villa Monastero.
