Le maléo est un grand mégapode et le seul membre du genre monotypique Macrocephalon. Le maleo est endémique de Sulawesi et de la petite île voisine de Buton en Indonésie. On le trouve dans les forêts tropicales de plaine et de collines, mais il niche dans les zones sablonneuses ouvertes, les sols volcaniques ou les plages chauffées par le soleil ou l'énergie géothermique pour l'incubation.
