Bottrop is een stad in het westen van Centraal-Duitsland, aan het Rijn-Herne-kanaal, in Noord-Rijnland-Westfalen. Bottrop, gelegen in het Ruhr-industriegebied, grenst aan Essen, Oberhausen, Gladbeck en Dorsten. De stad was een kolenmijn- en spoorwegcentrum en bevat fabrieken die koolteerderivaten, chemicaliën, textiel en machines produceren. Bottrop groeide vanaf de jaren 1860 als mijnbouwcentrum, werd in 1921 als stad gecharterd en gebombardeerd tijdens de oliecampagne van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. In 1975 verenigde het zich met de naburige gemeenschappen Gladbeck en Kirchhellen, maar Gladbeck verliet het in 1976, waardoor Kirchhellen een district van Bottrop werd als Bottrop-Kirchhellen.
