Giessen, in het Duits gespeld als Gießen is een stad in de Duitse deelstaat (Bundesland) Hessen, de hoofdstad van zowel het district Giessen als de administratieve regio Giessen. De bevolking is ongeveer 86.000, met ongeveer 44.000 universitaire studenten. De naam komt van Giezzen, zoals het voor het eerst werd genoemd in 1197, wat verwijst naar de positie van de stad tussen verschillende rivieren, meren en beken. De grootste rivier in Giessen is de Lahn, die de stad in twee delen (west en oost) verdeelt, ongeveer 50 kilometer (31 mijl) ten noorden van Frankfurt am Main.
