Lauingen is een stad in het district Dillingen in Beieren, Duitsland. Het ligt op de linkeroever van de Donau, 5 km ten westen van Dillingen en 37 km ten noordoosten van Ulm. In juni 1800 vochten de legers van de Franse Eerste Republiek, onder bevel van Jean Victor Moreau, tegen Habsburgse stamgasten en Württembergse contingenten, onder het algemene bevel van Pál Kray. Kray had zijn toevlucht gezocht in het fort van Ulm; Moreau verlegde zijn leger om Ulm vanuit het oosten te naderen. Kray had opdracht gegeven tot voorbereiding op de vernietiging van alle bruggen over de Donau, inclusief die bij Lauingen.
