Borgo is een Italiaans woord verwant met Engelse gemeente, Duitse Burg, Franse bourg, dat meestal de nieuwe stad betekent buiten de muren van een oude stad (de paese). Heel vaak is de borgo een aparte frazione van de paese, en de naam is die van de stad waaraan Borgo is toegevoegd, voor of na: de benedenstad Trevi is bijvoorbeeld Borgo Trevi; de benedenstad van Cerreto di Spoleto is Cerreto Borgo.
