Aalter is een gemeente tussen Brugge en Gent in de Belgische provincie Oost-Vlaanderen. De gemeente bestaat uit de steden Aalter, Bellem, Lotenhulle, Poeke, Knesselare en Ursel. In het noorden grenst het aan Maldegem, in het oosten aan Zomergem en Nevele, in het zuiden aan Deinze en in het westen aan de provincie West-Vlaanderen. Op 1 januari 2007 had Aalter een totale bevolking van 18.887. De totale oppervlakte bedraagt 81,92 km² wat een bevolkingsdichtheid van 231 inwoners per km² oplevert.
