Orio had een populatie van 5.901 inwoners vanaf 2016. Van oudsher een stad die aan zee en de visserijsector grenst, verliest deze sector terrein aan het meer winstgevende en minder veeleisende toerisme, dat zich snel ontwikkelt nadat moerassen tussen de stad en het strand werden drooggelegd met met het oog op het bouwen van nieuwe toeristisch georiënteerde woningen. De meest bekende en opvallende sportactiviteit in Orio is de roeiregatta die typerend is voor het Baskische en Cantabrische kustgebied, met een team dat wordt weergegeven door de gele kleur. De stad wordt bediend door de kustlijn van Euskotren, de weg N-634 en de snelweg A-8 (sinds 2010).
