Salzgitter is een onafhankelijke stad in het zuidoosten van Nedersaksen, Duitsland, gelegen tussen Hildesheim en Braunschweig. Samen met Wolfsburg en Braunschweig is Salzgitter een van de zeven Oberzentren van Nedersaksen (ongeveer gelijk aan een grootstedelijk gebied). Met 101.079 inwoners en 223,92 vierkante kilometer (86,46 vierkante mijl) (per 31 december 2015), is het gebied het grootste in Nedersaksen en een van de grootste in Duitsland. Salzgitter is ontstaan als een conglomeraat van verschillende kleine steden en dorpen en bestaat vandaag uit 31 stadsdelen, relatief compacte agglomeraties met daartussen uitgestrekte open gebieden. De belangrijkste winkelstraat van de jonge stad ligt in de gemeente Lebenstedt en de centrale zakenwijk in de gemeente Salzgitter-Bad.
