Het is de administratieve hoofdstad van de provincie Como. Door de nabijheid van het Comomeer en de Alpen is Como een toeristische bestemming geworden en de stad bevat talrijke kunstwerken, kerken, tuinen, musea, theaters, parken en paleizen: de Duomo, de zetel van het bisdom Como; de basiliek van Sant'Abbondio; de Villa Olmo; de openbare tuinen met de Tempio Voltiano; het Teatro Sociale; de Broletto of het middeleeuwse stadhuis van de stad; en het 20e-eeuwse Casa del Fascio.
