Gera is de op twee na grootste stad van Thüringen, Duitsland, met 96.000 inwoners, 55 kilometer (34 mijl) ten zuiden van Leipzig, 75 km (47 mijl) ten oosten van Erfurt en 120 km (75 mijl) ten westen van Dresden. Gera werd voor het eerst genoemd in 995 en ontwikkelde zich in de 13e eeuw tot een stad. Later was het de residentie van verschillende lijnen van de Russen tot het einde van de monarchie in Duitsland in 1918. In de 19e eeuw werd Gera een centrum van de textielindustrie en beleefde een periode van snelle groei. In 1952 werd de stad ook een administratief centrum in de DDR als een van de hoofdsteden van het administratieve district Gera (Bezirk).
